In the 500 years after the fall of the Roman Empire Europe struggled to regain the glory it once held. Every step forward, however, seemed to result in two steps back. The advances made by Charlemagne were just as quickly erased by the attacks of the Vikings. Europe continued to struggle without a unified leader. Both kings and popes wanted to take up the role of leader and would fight to do so. Feudalism, however, remained dominant and the small kingdoms it produced failed to unify. During the next few hundred years though Europe would be rocked by major events that would break down the feudal system once and for all. The Crusades, the growth of towns and the ravaging of the Black Death would finally wake Europe up from a 1,000 year sleep.
