After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 A.D. western Europe fell into a period of disunity. The glory and knowledge that the empire had was crushed. Ideas about culture and technology were lost for centuries. Europe actually took a huge step backwards.  Historians have called this period in Europe The Dark Ages due to how little writing was done. It was certainly a dark time for the west.
